What prebiotic fiber actually is

A prebiotic is a fiber your own body cannot digest. It survives the stomach and small intestine intact, arrives in the large intestine, and gets fermented by the bacteria that live there. The bacteria use it as fuel and produce short-chain fatty acids in return, most notably butyrate, which feeds the cells lining your colon.

That fermentation step is the whole goal. A fiber that passes straight through without being fermented adds bulk and not much else. A fermentable fiber changes the makeup of your microbiome, and the microbiome influences digestion, immune function, blood sugar, metabolism, estrogen clearance and inflammation.

Almost all prebiotic fibers are soluble fibers, which is why the two terms get used interchangeably, but they are not identical. Soluble describes how the fiber behaves in water, while prebiotic describes what your bacteria do with it.

Prebiotic and probiotic: the difference, and why you want both

Probiotics are live bacteria you swallow. Prebiotics are the food those bacteria eat.

Which fibers are actually prebiotic

Here is how the common fibers behave in your gut:

  • Acacia gum: One of the most studied prebiotic fibers, and one of the gentlest. It ferments slowly and steadily along the length of the colon, which is why it produces far less gas than the fast-fermenting alternatives. It is the base of all three Florasophy blends.

What prebiotic fiber does in the body

Digestion and regularity: Fermentable fiber draws water into the stool and supports the bacteria that keep transit moving. The result is more regular, easier bowel movements, built over days rather than hours.

Hormone balance: Soluble fiber binds used estrogen in the gut so it leaves the body instead of being reabsorbed. Sluggish elimination is one of the reasons estrogen levels stay high.

How to choose a prebiotic fiber supplement

  • Look for a blend rather than a single fiber. Multiple fiber types feed a wider range of bacteria.
  • Check where the fibers ferment. Slow, distal fermenters such as acacia gum and Sunfiber are far gentler than inulin and chicory root.
  • Read past the marketing panel to the ingredient list. Added sugar, sucralose, artificial colors and flavors are common, and they undo part of what you are buying the fiber for.
  • Check for organic certification. Fiber is an agricultural product and it is consumed daily in large amounts.
  • Confirm third-party testing for identity, potency and purity, and check that the manufacturer is cGMP certified.
  • If your gut is sensitive, look for low FODMAP certified fibers.
  • Ignore any product promising results in 24 hours. Microbiome change takes weeks.

How much to take and how to start

Adults need a minimum of 25 to 38 grams of total fiber a day, and Americans get about half that on average. Soluble fiber should make up a meaningful share of it. Our recommendation based on the latest science is at least 20 grams of soluble fiber and 20 grams of insoluble fiber per day.

Ramp up slowly. This is the single most important instruction on this page, and skipping it is why so many people decide fiber supplements do not agree with them.

  • Days 1 to 7: 1 teaspoon a day, mixed into 6 to 8 ounces of water, diluted juice or a smoothie, and drunk right away.
  • Week 2 onward: increase by 1 teaspoon every few days as tolerated.

Drink enough water. Fiber works by holding water, and taking it without adequate fluid is counterproductive.
